This year, the “IMI – IT meets Industry” event will once again take place as a virtual dialog covering different focus topics over several days. On September 21st, 2021, “Industrial 5G” is on the agenda. Evonik and BASF, among others, will present their experiences on their way to their own 5G campus network, while manufacturers and security experts will show what industrial users need to bear in mind when it comes to the new mobile communications standard.

The event format “IMI – IT meets Industry” sees itself as a platform where IT and OT meet to discuss digitalization and cyber security in industry. Here, thought leaders, experienced users and leading manufacturers meet to exchange practical experiences. To keep the dialog going in the OT community, several dates with different topics will be offered again this year. From September 14 to December 7, 2021, a total of seven topic areas are on the schedule for IMI 2021.

Industrial 5G

Licenses for private 5G campus networks have been awarded in Germany for just under two years. Among the 5G pioneers are leading companies from the process industry. At “IMI – Industrial 5G“, they report on the opportunities and risks associated with the use of the new mobile communications technology.

In the live sessions, the companies present their experiences as early adopters: Successes, but also hurdles and surprises in the introduction of 5G. Well-known user companies report on which use cases are planned, which considerations were the basis for the decisions on the choice of partners and the technology used, how industry expectations can be reconciled with the equipment suppliers’ offerings – or not. The exciting, practical insights also include how to ensure that IT and OT understand each other in 5G projects. And that the 5G campus projects mean a steep learning curve not only on the part of the users in the industry, but also on the part of the equipment suppliers.

Another important aspect is the role of security from the user’s perspective. Where are familiar, where are new aspects of IT security to be found? How can the high demands of the industry be solved? Which technologies, which providers are there in this field? In addition, we will discuss available solutions, the advantages of the next 5G release in industrial use and further developments.
