A mobile communications network (still) includes radio masts. Their installation is subject to many different technical, financial and licensing requirements. A look at Switzerland shows its own way.

The majority of Swiss mobile base stations are installed on a single mast. Despite the rollout of 5G in Switzerland, provider Sunrise UPC retains the established 2G, 3G and 4G sites, which poses major challenges in terms of antenna space, wind resistance and the position of the new antennas. However, keeping the original sites creates a time advantage, as construction permits often take several months. Thus, the addition of Huawei’s BladeAAU Pro on existing base stations significantly accelerates 5G deployment.

5G modules at higher positions

By way of background, Huawei’s BladeAAU Pro integrates both active and passive antennas. This allows different bands and radio access technologies to be deployed on the same antennas, simplifying network deployment. This high level of integration allows one antenna to cover multiple network modes, reducing wind resistance and ensuring that 5G modules can be installed at higher positions on existing towers. With full-band support and wide bandwidth, the solution helps operators reduce deployment time and is flexible enough to adapt to different scenarios.

5G for smart agriculture

Alexander Lehrmann, Director of New Business Development and Innovation at Sunrise UPC, said, “Sunrise UPC is committed to continuing to lead the way in building high-quality 5G networks that deliver a world-class user experience, thereby driving our business to success.” In addition, Sunrise UPC looks forward to further innovation with Huawei to drive 5G business development in a variety of new areas, including smart construction, smart agriculture, smart healthcare and smart venues.

“5G development around the world is still in uncharted territory. Our goal is to provide innovative products and solutions for global operators to overcome 5G business challenges and explore more scenarios for 5G innovations and applications to ultimately achieve business success.”
