For companies and industry representatives taking the long way to Hannover Trade Fair this year, finding the right solution for their connectivity requirements might be akin to looking for a needle in a haystack. That’s why we’ve compiled some highlights from the industrial router, campus, and private network sectors in this listicle. This will give visitors a comprehensive overview of what and where they can find when it comes to 5G in industries.

At HANNOVER MESSE 2023, three partners VDMA, ZVEI, and Deutsche Messe are, jointly presenting the “Industrial Wireless Arena + 5G Networks & Applications” and bringing the latest in wireless communication systems, under one roof. The VDMA is represented by the working group Wireless Communications for Machines (AG WCM), the ZVEI is represented by the 5G-ACIA, and Deutsche Messe is bringing its 5G Smart Venue to the project as a campus network.

Deutsche Messe’s 5G Smart Venue

The aim of the partners is to use concrete use cases to show which technological innovations already exist in the field of wireless technologies, which technologies can be specifically applied, and which ones need to be developed in the future. This is especially a boon for the Deutsche Messe’s 5G Smart Venue, as it makes it the ideal networking ground for all the visitors and exhibitors alike at the 2023 HANNOVER MESSE. Different people, companies, research, and knowledge levels can, thereby, come together in one place via the networks of 5G-ACIA and AG WCM and can exchange their previous experiences and future visions.

This listicle has skimmed the Hannover Fair’s online press site to find the latest press releases from exhibiting companies. If you are a visiting company looking to strengthen your factories’ 5G connectivity, this listicle will walk you through some of the featured exhibits and the exact locations, where you can find them.

Industrial 5G mobile routers

Wireless 5G router technologies offer new flexibility and performance to businesses and industries that are looking for faster response times with a reliable and stable connection. While 5G routers can be applied to a range of networking issues, the goals remain the same – increase bandwidth, reduce latency, and improve the reliability of communications.  Below are a few examples of industrial 5G routers and the companies that shall be showcasing them this year at the Hannover Messe.

Exhibition booth: Hall 14, Stand H06, (26)

Siemens shall display two routers, the SCALANCE MUM853-1, and SCALANCE MUM856-1. Each router is said to be having individual strengths for every application. The SCALANCE product range is known for its reliable performance in harsh industrial environments, and according to Siemens, the same happens to be the case with the SCALANCE MUM85x-1 products.  The compact SCALANCE MUM853-1 router is designed for use in the control cabinet, while the SCALANCE MUM856-1 can be mounted directly on stationary or mobile participants thanks to the robust IP65 housing.

Using 5G in industrial applications is now becoming a worthwhile alternative. The built-in IPv6 support and the support of previous cellular standards (4G, 3G) when 5G connectivity is unavailable, make SCALANCE MUM853-1 and MUM856-1 a safe investment to get started with 5G, state their makers and proprietors. By using VXLAN, the routers already enable PROFINET communication via private 5G networks (Release 15) and can thus open up new potential for production and business.

5G Private Networks

Private 5G is a wireless network technology that delivers cellular connectivity for personal network use cases, such as private businesses, third-party providers, and municipalities. Private 5G is an alternative to Wi-Fi, along with other wireless options, like public Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and public 5G. Here are some exhibiting companies and their 5G private networks on offer at the Hannover Messe 2023.

5G Campus Networks

In combination with the public mobile radio network, “campus networks” are created, which combine the advantages of public and private networks for industrial value creation.  A campus network offers a particularly high level of coverage, capacity, and availability on given premises. Industrial companies, thereby, have a more secure and efficient infrastructure. In the future, completely new business models will also be possible with this technology. Let’s have a look at the companies at Hannover Messe that shall bring along their homegrown 5G campus networks.

Modular 5G Nomadic Node by Fraunhofer
