There are six more industrial-grade 5G routers (Source: Cisco / Inseego / Prostend / Amit / Planet / Eltec Systems)

The range of 5G routers suitable for industrial use is growing slowly. However, development backlogs due to the corona lockdowns and the current chip shortage are also leaving their mark here. So far not all manufacturers who had announced new devices for 2021 have invited their promises. Nevertheless, we can report a small increase with the current update – in terms of delivery capability, as always, without guarantee.

Cisco Catalyst IR1835

Cisco Catalyst IR1835

Cisco Catalyst IR1835

Network specialist Cisco has renewed its portfolio of industrial routers and is marketing the Catalyst IR1800 series as IoT edge devices. Depending on the model, they offer a different number of expansion slots, the IR1835 currently marks the upper end with two radio and one WiFi slot, for which modules for Wi-Fi 6, 5G, 4G, Private LTE, FirstNet und Wi-SUN are available. Additional features include integrated security functions, dual SIM, CAN bus, PoE +, four digital I/O ports and a combined RS232/485 interface.

The main memory comprises 8 GB, a 100 GB SSD hard drive can be added, as well as a GNSS module for mobile applications. The devices are approved for automotive applications, for example in trains and trucks, and for use in hazardous environments such as the oil and gas industry. Cisco also points out the ease-of-use-design: CPU and batteries can be updated in the field if necessary.

Inseego Wavemaker Pro 5G S2000e

Inseego Wavemaker Pro 5G S2000e

The Wavemaker Pro 5G S2000e is available in different housings: for harsh industrial environments, for server rooms or for outdoor use. Depending on the model, only the Sub6 spectrum (below 6 GHz) or Sub6+mmW (millimeter waves, spectrum above 24 GHz) is covered. Up to 4.9 Gbit/s flow over the 5 GB Ethernet interface with PoE, the USB port 3.1 Type C manages up to 2.7 Gbit/s, for example for USB tethering, USB WAN modem or with a USB to Ethernet adapter.

Dual SIM, integrated security functions, keep-alive support and LTE fallback should guarantee the reliability of the connection and high data throughput. According to the manufacturer, the thermal design enables operation without throttling the data rate even under continuous load.

Proscend M350

Proscend M350

Proscend M350

The modular router series M350 from Proscend covers a wide range of applications: in harsh industrial environments, for company networks or as an FWA device (Fixed Wireless Access). The supported radio standards include 5G NR (SA), LTE (FDD/TDD) and WCDMA. The model variant W5G has integrated WiFi5 access point function.

Dual SIM and fail-over with Ethernet WAN as well as integrated security functions and load balancing are intended to ensure fail-safe operation. IPv6 is also integrated, as is the support of MQTT for IIoT applications (Industrial Internet of Things), as well as Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP.

Amit IDG780-0GP21

Amit IDG780-0GP21

Amit IDG780-0GP21

The industrial router from Amit supports 5G NR as well as LTE (Cat 20) and WLAN 802.11 b/g/n on 2.4 GHz. Dual SIM, integrated security functions such as various VPN stacks and a firewall, and power supply via PoE are also part of the standard equipment at Amit.

The Ethernet ports can be configured either as 1 x LAN/1 x WAN or 2 x LAN. In addition, the device memory can be expanded using a memory card (micro SD). The IDG780 is suitable for both wall mounting and top-hat rail.

Planet ICG-2515-NR

Planet ICG-2515-NR

Planet ICG-2515-NR

In this device, Planet combines both 5G NR and WiFi6, plus LTE FDD/TDD, WCDMA and GSM. In addition to dual SIM, the ICG-2515-NR router also offers dual WAN, with corresponding fail-over and roaming functions, so that sufficient power is always available for bandwidth-hungry and time-critical applications.

Integrated security functions, including firewall and protection against DoS and DDoS attacks, should also enable mission-critical use. The antennas are not mounted directly on the housing, but can be freely positioned. Two digital inputs and two digital outputs are available, as well as a serial interface (RS 485). Several different navigation systems are integrated to determine the position for mobile applications.

Eltec Cybox GW 2-P

Eltec Cybox GW 2-P

Eltec Cybox GW 2-P

The Eltec router Cybox GW 2-P supports 5G with up to 2.4 Gbit/s in download and 500 Mbit/s in upload or LTE Cat 18 with up to 1.2 Gbit/s in download and 225 Mbit/s in Upload. In addition, WLAN 802.11ac Wave 2 is available, up to 1.7 Gbit/s should be possible here.

Two free sockets allow specific I/O extensions for vehicle buses such as CAN and MVB. The manufacturer wants to make further modules available, e.g. for RS 485 and RS 232. Integrated security functions should also protect the devices connected via the access point. The Cybox is certified according to EN 50155 for use in rail vehicles.

For all presented models applies:

Unless otherwise noted, the devices are usually only announced, but test samples can partly already be requested. In view of the dynamics of the market, we must point out that up-to-date information on availability, delivery times and prices should be obtained directly from the manufacturer or the usual sources of supply.
