Europe and especially the DACH region is an important growth market for many international enterprises. The cloud and IT provider QCT from Taiwan is one of the companies that want to gain a stronger foothold here. FUENF-G has inquired about motives and goals.

While European companies tend not to be among the international pioneers in the adoption of the IIoT backbone 5G, they are nevertheless at the center of many international equipment suppliers. Looking at the major trends, it becomes clear where the journey is heading: from the advent of digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence in productions–to the megatrends of our society, such as increasing aging and an accompanying shortage of skilled workers but also the trend towards individualization, it becomes clear that highly flexible, digital and highly automated factories will be needed in the coming years.

Even if the manufacturing industry has not yet understood this down to all departments, suppliers worldwide know that Europe will be an exciting market also for the use of state-of-the-art technologies such as 5G. The growth, we hear from software vendors and service providers from Asia, for example, will take place here sooner or later. And companies are positioning themselves: for example, Quantum Cloud Technology (QCT) from Taiwan opened a research lab in Düren at the end of November.

Smart city already in focus

Miao-Shan Wu (EMEA Head of Operations and Commercials at QCT) opened the new offices together with Mike Yang (Senior Vice President & GM of QCT) and representatives of the city of Düren. While the mayor hopes to get a driver in the necessary structural change, QCT is focused on bringing its cloud solutions into position. When applications around Smart City, in the health sector or in industry rely on artificial intelligence on a larger scale, the Taiwanese offer is at hand.

The opening ceremony then also emphasized the goal of growing beyond purely cloud applications and adding value in local private 5G networks, for example in the automated configuration of server racks using self-learning 5G assembly robots.

Solutions for the 5G campus

FUENF-G wanted to understand QCT’s goals in more detail and asked the business development team for more details:

QCT is known as a provider of IT solutions of software-controlled hardware. What exactly is the new research lab in Düren for?
QCT’s campus 5G solution, OmniPOD, consists of standalone 5G core and 5G RAN. The 5G and AI lab in Düren is to cooperate with 3rd party companies and partners on validating their derived 5G devices, use cases, and solutions with QCT’s campus 5G solution (OmniPOD). With this lab, QCT hopes to build up 5G ecosystem with German/European partners.

Which target groups do you address in particular in Germany and Europe?
QCT targets to cooperate with enterprises especially in manufacturing, healthcare, and research institution.

What specific applications can an interested company look at? Which industries are they particularly open to working with?
Manufacturing: automotive manufacturing, factory automation
Logistics: fleet management, asset tracking, AGV/AMR
Healthcare: AR/VR assistance
Agriculture: forest monitoring by drone
Harbour: smart port, smart harbour

How important is the topic of digital transformation? Where can medium-sized companies do better? Which aspects should be focused on first?
Digital transformation is the mainstream for a wide range of industries, and 5G plays a key role therein. For enterprise users, security and user-friendly management are the main considerations for the network, justifying their desire for 5G campus solution.

What are the further plans for expanding the presence in Germany?
Campus 5G attains not only throughput improvement such as from 3G to 4G, but also flexible UL, DL configuration, higher fulfilment of security and so forth URLLC, positioning, and network slicing in future, which are more for enterprise scenarios. To consolidate the foundation for the aforementioned future 5G development, so as to accelerate the 5G penetration, QCT has established an open lab for 3rd UE device and solution partners to test with QCT 5G solution for enterprises to have hands-on certified UE and solution, and also carried out POC with research institutions to verify various enterprise applications.
